After taking it all apart and, machining the barrel it was discovered that the round was hanging up on the vent. We will reassemble it Saturday AM and more than likly give it a test. These guns must have been a disappointment to Mo. Gen. Jeff Thompson. First he braggs about getting them, then is waiting to test their worth in battle when they arrive. He does not mention them again in the OR.S , not even at their loss to the 7th Ill cav.
Still digging for info.

I heard that you were going to test fire it today. The report hasn't gotten here yet.

Unfortunately, with the as humid as it was and the rain the paint wouldn't dry and it remains unassembled. Did get the second barrel assembled for machining today.

This is more encouraging; found a 1863 quote in the OR's referring to the HUghes gun as being " The best breech-loader now in the service." Won't make my Ellsworth second, but the Hughes is prettier.

The Hughes gun is definitely an eye catcher. So is the paint dry yet?

The barn is not close to my house either but I would assume so. New plan is to assembly on Saturday AM. B. H. mentoned maybe bringing it to Richmond next weekend. It will be a Bluewater the following weekend.

Tested the gum disk (rubber) seal for the breech and it was found not to leak. Good to go.
